The novel Reconfigurement is structured into thirteen chapters. In fact, many Americans find themselves at a dead end after years of hard work due to a lack of good retirement planning or inappropriate advices from the traditional retirement planners. Thus, they sink into depression and vices such as alcohol, narcotics, etc. As a financial advisor for many years, the author has devoted most of the book's chapters of the novel to this concern under the concept of Reconfigurement financial planning. He draws attention to the gap between traditional planning and the current reality and encourage people for “planning ahead”. Such strategy focus on pre and post-retirement activities. Therefore, the author revealed the necessity to do a career assessment in order to find the best possible career since 70% of Americans don’t like their job. Career assessment, which can be done online (www. careerplanner.com) involves: career aptitude assessment (based on Dr Holland’s theory of career and vocational choices classifying people into six types personality), work value assessment, pairin, traitify, plum, career planner and myers-briggs. Retirement planning required also softwares. Envestnet Money Guide (or MGPro) is mostly used by author’s firm. All the details are taken into account in setting up the retirement plan including life insurance (life protection), social security, investments (mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, etc), health insurance, long-term care insurance, wills and trusts, etc. The author discussed types of retirement plan such as defined-benefit plan (or DB plan also called defined-benefit pension plan), which is often replaced by defined-contribution plan (DC plan) such as 401(k) plans. It is also noticed that the DC plan is more profitable.
What I liked is that this novel is unique in the sense that the author has focused on a reality of daily life that eludes many workers. Many people have dreams and ambitions, but are quickly caught up in reality. The author has discussed a financial issue in simple terms that everyone can understand.
What I didn't like about this novel was the fact that, as you read through it, you would have liked to have seen a summary chapter that succinctly summed up the rules or conduct to be observed by workers for a peaceful retirement. Also, the tables in the book are not numbered which is important (for example: Page 59; Page 68).
Then, my rating is 5 out of 5 stars and 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to young people looking for job, at the start of an employment contract, in the middle of an employment contract or close to retirement. This book can help them build a successful career and better plan financially for retirement.
