Review of YOU CAN TALK TO ANYONE:
You must have come across the terms social disconnection and loneliness. The book YOU CAN TALK TO ANYONE by Ellen Dawson presents a study and discussion of these problems in human life. The forced isolation of people that caused social disconnection during the recent pandemic lockdown, is the motivation for the creation of this book. It is difficult to understand the loneliness, isolation, or disconnectedness, which leads to 'Social Anxiety.' Human beings are incredibly complex; internal and external forces add to our complexity.' Often in our daily lives, unnecessary, unreasonable, and wrong comments by other people and even family members are internalized and take on new negative and discouraging meanings. How to create and develop social connections through effective communication and conversation is the central theme of this book. Author Ellen Dawson says 'A rich and active social life offers many positive benefits to our physical, emotional, and mental health.' She has explained her say very nicely.
This book comprises six chapters. The feeling of disconnection, the benefits of being with others, conversational techniques helping to connect to people, and live social connections are the key topics discussed in these chapters. The health benefits of social connections are elaborated in one chapter. The importance of engaging in live social connections like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn is narrated in the next chapter. Social groups, conversational groups, meetup groups, their creation, and their significance for social connectedness are discussed in a separate chapter. The last chapter is devoted to narrating the importance of friendship. The guidelines on making friends, to keeping friends are narrated pointwise.
The first positive aspect of the book is that the thoughts expressed are real, genuine, and actual. The imagination of possible facts and reasons for the mental state of a person suffering from the condition of loneliness and isolation; is spontaneous. The author is free and frank in her statements. I liked the statements like: 'Humanity has not invented any new issues!' 'We often feel like the world is unfair when we experience one or two unfavorable situations.' Friendship means different things to different people.' 'Respectability, responsibility, and openness are the primary attributes that attract others.''Be your genuine self.' 'Social connection can improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being.' I also liked the simple, clear, and understandable language.
I observed some negative aspects too. The author seems to be assuming that the reader is already isolated and socially disconnected. For example, she says 'Right now, I'm in the same place as you!' 'I am walking the same path you are currently on.' I disliked the lengthy description of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Meetup Group, etc. which contribute nothing to the core subject of the book.
The book is professionally edited. Considering that the positive points exceed the negative points as stated above, I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to readers seeking
'self-help' on the disturbed condition of life due to the recent pandemic lockdown. They will certainly be able to regain a normal, happy, and cheerful life.
