It is human nature to be curious about our universe and question how it evolved into what we understand today. Fundamental physics requires us to continue to seek answers to these questions. In his illuminating and beautifully written novel, Daniel Friedman explains how science and religion are unable to answer our questions around the moment when the universe was conceived. He explains how the Big Bang Theory relates to quantum physics, using the Torah and Kabbalah, an ancient Jewish mystical interpretation of the bible, to provide answers.
Daniel attempts to enlighten us by transforming informative and complex information into easily understood text and captures our imagination by incorporating it within a fascinating storyline, Being a layman, I applaud him for his outstanding elucidation. Daniel expertly explains the shortcomings of science while augmenting this with scripture to amplify our limited understanding of the beginning of time.
I was particularly intrigued by the following passage "The fact that the classical and quantum worlds don't coexist in a single theory is at the root of why science can't explain the beginning of the universe. We don't know whether time is universal and although progress has been made in understanding why time flows in only one direction, we still don't have a solid explanation. What we have discovered is that the equations of physics work just as efficiently with time running backwards, so it's not clear why time's arrow points only to the future." Perhaps one day in the future we'll be able to return and fix our mistakes!
I found the Lego concept of explaining how the universe works was commendable although it did deviate somewhat from the main thrust of the story, it didn't in any way detract from my overall positive reading experience. I have no hesitation in awarding this beautifully written and informative piece a full star rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
The glossary and footnotes were an inspiring addition and will assist those interested in further research. The book was professionally edited and contained no errors. It would appeal to those who, like myself, have numerous questions concerning the beginning of time and the validity of the various religious and scientific theories. Readers from both sides of the religious divide should find enjoyment and insight within its pages. It will also appeal to readers who have an interest in quantum physics and scientific concepts.
