Niching Up: The Narrower The Market, The Bigger The Prize by Chris Dreyer was an unexpected engaging read. I enjoyed the author’s breakdown of niche marketing in a way that is simplistic and funny and not full of repetitive boring marketing jargon. From the first chapter Chris provides relatable examples from movie trends, sports and life experiences that are applicable to any level of business you endeavor or are presently functioning. He also provided an insightful premise of how to become an expert at what you endeavor to do by applying yourself solely to that interest until you have mastered it and know every angle every strategic move every step to achieve the success you want.

One of the most profound chapters was chapter 6, Relationship Equity, which provides a deeper insight on how business relationships shape the effect of our value in that relationship. Relating to this application as "currency" invokes a different perspective on the value of our business relationships. This is provocative to me, and I feel strongly it should also be integrated in our personal relationships and on-the-job relationships. That will guarantee that the value provided is reciprocated. That the value put into personal and business relationships comes back and that value can be accounted in the business and in our personal lives.

The only thing that was lacking was an index of the books and articles referenced which was not included. There were several references in each chapter, so I will have to go back and make the list myself.

My rating of Niching Up: The Narrower The Market, The Bigger The Prize is "4 out of 5 stars" because there was no index for the books and articles referenced. Acknowledgements were not complimentary to the book itself but mainly for the author's personal reference. An index would have been more appreciated.

My recommendation for the audience of Niching Up: The Narrower The Market, The Bigger The Prize would be 18 years to 70 plus years. This is a great book to read if you are just starting out in life and have no direction on what to do. It will give the reader direction on how to narrow their interest and gifts and how to surround themselves with those that will give them added value in their endeavors. It also teaches a simple method of becoming an expert at what you endeavor in life. For the reader who is experiencing midlife uncertainty this book will show them how to focus on what is best for right now as well as future business and personal pursuits. For the elders, like me, this is must read to free ourselves from all the businesses and personal relationships we could have had or would have had and invite new and exciting relationships that will add value to our life now and in the future. I will definitely refer this book to several of my peers as well as the young people in my life and also the mid life folks who are currently seeking where they fit in this life.
