This piece of non-fiction comes in a truly enjoyable package: Chris Dreyer writes about a subject he is clearly passionate about, and does so in a direct and easy-to-follow manner. “Niching Up” opens to each of its readers a door to the possibility of expanding potentially any business through a very specific practice: that of selecting a small area of expertise instead of going for the generalized market. Chris Dreyer uses his talent for storytelling and his remarkable life experience to explain his readers exactly what it means to niche up, and how to find the right niche for their business.

Chris’s own voice is doubtlessly one of the strong points of “Niching Up”: a nerd by his own admission, he knows how to capture the readers’ attention from the very first Jedi-based example of his field of expertise. The result is an easy-going reading full of practical advice, great insights, useful examples and sources of information.

Two other strong selling points made “Niching Up” so interesting to me: the first is the way the author tackles the “cons” of niching at the very beginning, instead of sweeping them under the rug of a “hopefully by now you won’t be bothered with this” last chapter. Far from being a discouraging analysis, it allows the readers to go into each possible disadvantage in detail and presents them with possible solutions, and even numerous ways in which each disadvantage might turn into an advantage. The second selling point is that Chris is not a salesperson, speaking to moving wallets; he is a person that believes that the best-kept secret is broke, and that there is strength in networking.

I would definitely recommend “Niching Up” to any business owner, big or small: not only it’s an interesting reading, but it’s flawlessly edited, and Chris’s sense of humor is a nice plus.
