Review of Purpose
At a young age, Gina Bianchini saw the power of close relationships and community as a safe haven for curiosity enhancement and creativity development. She also found out that a community can not only assist its members in overcoming potential difficulties but also live with a purpose. Now, in her book, the successful entrepreneur, Founder, and CEO of Mighty Networks, draws from her own experience and work to deliver accurate and specific advice on how to find one’s purpose and build a thriving community around it.
PURPOSE: Design a Community & Change Your Life is divided into three parts. The first is all about finding exploring and clarifying that specific purpose that can make someone live with intention. Combining her personal observations of her own community with the witnessing of rapid technological progress she experienced growing up in Cupertino, CA, the author narrates her story of how she went on to found and establish companies centered around her belief that building digital communities with a purpose is a modern demand and a cultural necessity.
The author believes that having a purpose is a solo process and maybe even a useless pursuit unless shared with the world. Bianchini, whose company Mighty counts numerous famous personalities around the world who were able to transform their fears and inhibitions into positive action, wants to help “people put their purpose into motion through the power of community.” Drawing from other authors, artists, scientists, and creators’ experiences, the author offers practical advice and daily rituals to help her readers ease into new habits with the intention of finding a higher purpose in their lives.
After clarifying one’s sense of purpose, one can proceed with becoming the host of a community, which is what the second part of the book deals with. Here, Bianchini goes the extra mile to debunk the myths and inhibitions holding people back and points out the exact steps needed to acquire a growth mindset and become a great host.
The third part of the book shows how to transfer one’s purpose onto the digital realm to reap the benefits of reaching millions and making a bold move into the world. The author offers a clear path into how one might bring their idea into life and how to tackle potential problems that might arise in the process of launching their online community project.
All in all, Purpose is a smoothly written book, with easy-to-apply steps for building a community around one’s goals, and aspirations. Bianchini generously recounts her experience in order to encourage readers to dig into their own interests and agendas and generate ideas on how to establish a network of like-minded individuals. In her own words, in her moment of enlightenment, she wanted “to continue to scale millions of massively meaningful tight-knit communities for people to use to create together, learn together, and collaborate together.”
By denouncing the ills of social media and advocating for a new way of living, this book becomes timely and urgent, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic that deprived people of their community gatherings and isolated them into doom-scrolling and a life devoid of inspiration and creativity. As a result, Purpose suggests an exhilarating new way of harnessing the power of technology for the greater good.
Even if one does not go through with all the steps till the creation of a thriving online community, Purpose is designed to help anyone find their purpose and establish a strong network to spread their ideas, gain insights, and consequently, create their own culture.
Ultimately, there are books about becoming rich, achieving our personal goals, and realizing our ambitions but one about doing all this while maintaining a higher cause and using the latest cutting-edge technological advancements was missing from the market. Gina Bianchini offers a refreshing take and inspiring read, a truly actionable map to finding one’s voice and compass in life and designing communities for collective growth. As a result, the book deserves at least 4 out of 5 stars for its new perspective on what it means to build a community with a purpose, especially in our time and era.
