Scarred: A Journey of Restoration by Jan Levine is an inspirational Christian memoir.
At just 4 years old, an event occurs that causes Jan to feel as though her mother doesn't want her. Following this incident, she is sent to live with her father which reinforces that belief. She spends the rest of her childhood trying to find love and acceptance from two very broken people: her parents. When she doesn't find what her heart is longing for, she makes some very bad decisions as a teenager and adult. Thankfully, her journey does not end there.
This is truly an inspiring tale of redemption and forgiveness. I am amazed by the author's experiences. I love that she often goes outside of her own perception of her past to show other sides of the story. That is something many people are not able to do. Understanding that the way we perceive events as a child may not be the absolute truth is an important part of finding healing and freedom from past hurts.
Unlike many memoirs, this book has a fast pace. I breezed through it. The author has a nice balance between giving enough information and keeping the story moving forward.
I love that the author is able to tell the dark parts of her story with a positive mindset. I have read many memoirs that were hard to finish because the horrible things that the authors went through weighed me down. That is not the case with this book. In fact, I could hardly put it down. I was dying to know what would happen next and find out how the author found healing from her troubled past.
I don't often cry during books, but the chapter titled “For My Children” had me tearing up. I was so touched and overjoyed that she found freedom from the guilt and shame that I am sure plagued her. Hurray for happy tears!
My only critique for this book is that there were sections where the timing was confusing. Sometimes it jumps back and forth between different time frames or mentions something that takes place further on in the story. At times, this made me wonder if certain events had happened yet or not. Even so, I was able to keep track of it enough that it did not hinder my enjoyment of the book in any way.
Without a shadow of a doubt, I give Scarred: A Journey of Restoration 4 out of 4 stars. It is a well-written, gripping story of redemption. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to find healing from a troubled past or dysfunctional family. Although, I think anyone who enjoys a heartwarming story will love it as well.
