Review of Copying a Man's Shirt

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Copying a Man's Shirt" by Laurel Hoffmann.]
"Copying a Man’s Shirt" by Laurel Hoffman is a comprehensive guide on how to perfectly copy a man’s shirt, just as the title literally indicates. It’s my first time coming across a sewing guide as concise as this.
The book begins with a table of contents for easy reference. Hoffman acknowledged fashion students who have tested the book. There are illustrations provided that students can follow for a proper understanding of the methods to use. The author also listed the sewing and drafting supplies needed for the proper execution of the garment. She goes further to explain the common drafting and sewing terms, such as block out, flat patterning, drafting, gauge, and so on.
I love the fact that the author included shirt measurements for different sizes, such as XS, S, M, L, XL, and so on. She educates the readers on ways to choose a shirt that fits perfectly before purchase, such as making sure the sleeves have no loose ends and perfectly fit the mannequin. She also gave some tips on how to successfully trace a man’s shirt, including how to add seam allowance to different patterns of the shirt for a perfect fit.
From the illustrations and explanations, the author is obviously well-grounded in the fashion industry. She discusses the different methods used to sew both expensive and inexpensive garments. There’s a cutter’s must list, which helps determine the right quantity of materials and supplies required to sew a garment. Furthermore, there’s also a cost analysis chart, which helps the student or designer estimate the total cost of making the shirt.
I added new words and definitions to my already existing vocabulary of terms used in the fashion industry, such as yoke, draping, and mitering. I love that the author gave specific pages to turn to when having an issue with a particular pattern. I equally like how befitting the book’s title is, as it adequately summarises its content. There are also comprehensible sewing tips to follow for a neat finish.
Inasmuch as the author has explained the terms used in this book, one has to have a little background knowledge of fabrics and the fashion industry so as to properly follow the guide. There’s an index and appendix at the end of the book, for easy reference.
I rate this 5 out of 5 stars, as I see no reason to deduct any. I found a few errors, which means it was professionally edited.
This book is recommended for fashion students and designers. They will learn how to properly copy a man’s shirt.
