Having been raised in the Catholic religion and having attended all Catholic schools, including Catholic college, I was intrigued with the book Why God Allows Evil and Suffering by Sine Nomine. The title suggests there is an answer, though the classes I've taken on the subject have always been confusing, or, as I was told as a child, a "mystery." And, in reading this book, I was delighted to find the book gave concise, Bible-supported answers to multiple questions found in the Church.

This is an easy read for an answer to the burning question embedded in the title. I definitely give a 5 out of 5 rating. I personally do not highlight passages in books, but as I turned every page, I felt there was a treasure of understanding. Finally, the odd uneasiness that theological issues were beyond me vanished as it all became clearly laid out. The author starts at creation, then the beginning of mankind, from Genesis through chapters of the New Testament, he takes us through our journey away from God. We can read a well thought out explanation of the Trinity that pulls together three entities of God. This short book addresses provocative subjects such as free will versus predestination, reward and punishment, heaven and hell, from an all-loving, all-powerful, all-just, all-wise God.

The author also humbly describes how there are assumptions in our interpretations, so there are leaps of faith, but each assumption is discussed at length, including where the information came from, why we lean towards a particular way of thinking with this information, and thought-provoking alternatives to these thoughts, leading us back into the most logical explanations

After all, this specific question "Why does God allow evil and suffering?" is the mainstay of explaining any measure of faith to any non-Christian.

For me, reading this particular book brought light and clarity into life-long confusion about the universal question of what is good and what is evil in relation to the God I know.

As we face today’s world with multiple horrific natural disasters and talk of end times, Why God Allows Evil and Suffering has given me hope on a deeply spiritual level. I also found it to be readable for those of us who lack a degree in theology. Definitely a 5 out of 5.
