My Miserable Search for Enlightenment: A Quest for God and the Eternal Self by Mark Shelley Kenzer is a true story about Mark's journey to discover his spiritual self, following Eastern and Western religious beliefs. You will read about his experiences with his past lives, with the deceased, and his visions, to name a few. Even though he started a multi-million-dollar business on $300 and set up three charitable companies to help others, his life was challenging. Mark encountered many obstacles, like illness, betrayal, and other tragedies, that he had to learn to overcome. What role do our family, homes, jobs, wealth, and other materialistic items play in our lives? Grab a copy of this book to understand the true meaning of our existence and our identities.

I have always been interested in Eastern religions, but before reading this book, I never realized they had many similarities to Western religions. This realization is one of my favorite aspects of this book because it has changed my opinion of Eastern religions. The spiritual lessons at the end of each chapter summarize Mark's points through his stories in that chapter. Mark's humor is prevalent throughout this book. For example, he revealed how he and his brothers put records or pie pans in their pants when they got spanked. These remarks helped soften the harsh discussion about their abuse because they made me laugh while reading about the serious topic. There were many lessons in this book, and I appreciated every one of them, but my favorite was that telling the truth is only a challenge if you want to avoid admitting what the truth is.

You will not want to select this book if you are looking for a fast read because there are many thought-provoking topics that you will need to pause your reading to get their full impact. I did not consider this a flaw because it kept me turning the pages to learn more. The PDF version of this book has a few formatting problems that may be due to the download, but I recommend the author look at them. I am sure they resulted from the download because I encountered only one minor error that a professional editor could have easily missed. They would have noticed the formatting issues if they had been there before the download.

I found no reason not to give this professionally edited book less than 5 out of 5 stars. This book is interesting and a joy to read. I am so interested in what Mark says that I will check out his blog and his other book, Awaken Into Enlightenment. The professional editing, multiple positive aspects, and lack of negative aspects justify this perfect rating. The formatting issues mentioned above had no impact on my rating because of my belief that they were a result of the downloading process and not an error on the author's part.

Mature adults who want to read more about spiritual journeys, ghosts, reincarnation, life after death, Eastern religions, Western religions, or need help coping with life's obstacles are the ones I recommend this book to. Readings from both Eastern and Western religious books make this book suitable for anyone who believes in a higher being, whether they call this being God or not. I do not recommend this book to atheists or readers offended by non-borderline profanity.

The fact that the book talks about the similarities between the Eastern and Western religion makes the book a must-read. I think I will love to see how the author did that. I hope to get the chance to read it, even if it only for that aspect of the book book. Thank you for the wonderful review.
