“How dare I believe that we are all equal?” is just one of the many questions raised in Say My Name by Vickey Robinson, this really short and intense read that focuses on Black Americans and their treatment in their own country. The book spans from the abolition of slavery to the present and shows how things have undoubtedly changed for Blacks, but still not enough to put them on equal footing with whites.

This was a really intense reading experience. As an outsider, I try to keep abreast of America’s domestic affairs. But reading the words of a Black American citizen hit me in a way I didn’t expect. I really liked how the author explains how things came to be the way they are now in a very simple way. For example, I had no idea that “ghettos” were created by a domino effect that started with loans being made only to whites. This also taught me that Blacks were not allowed to own property and thus did not pay taxes that funded the schools. I really appreciate that Robinson explains these very important issues in just a few paragraphs without making them too complicated. I also really liked that the author never mentioned the name of the former American President, but just referred to him as “the 45th”. That was funny.

There is honestly nothing I disliked about this book. It opened my eyes to the struggle that many people still go through just because of the color of their skin. This concept amazes me so much that I still can’t quite grasp it. I can also say that the book is exceptionally well edited, without a doubt. I found only one minor error in it.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is short but very informative. It gets right to the point, teaches readers many valuable lessons, and ends with a positive and hopeful view of the future. If you want to learn more about black life in America, this is the book for you. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone! You can read it in a few hours, but it will keep you thinking for days!
