“Fighting Spots and Acne” by Ben Clarke is a non-fiction book based on helping people understands why acne occurs and how to best deal with it. The nice thing about it is that he doesn’t just provide a list of what to do to fix it. He talks about each topic carefully along with why it should help. I think it’s even better that the author himself struggled with acne when he was younger, and still does sometimes. It makes the information seem more reliable as it’s something that has helped him improve his skin throughout the past couple years of his life.
I personally feel that the book was extremely informative and actually enjoyable. I like how the author managed to state his facts but still put some of his personality into it as well. It just felt more personal and kind of made it feel like it was advice from a good friend. The book itself was very instructive and is a genuine source one could use to change their lives by helping cure their acne.
I agree with the opening statements about how acne can severely disrupt someone’s life, even if it’s not causing pain. So much of who a person is and how they act is based off of how they feel about themselves. So if you’re not confident with yourself then people will most likely see that you aren’t. If the acne causes a person to develop insecurities or messes up their life by ruining relationships, it has to go. However, the author does say that if the reader follows these steps then the acne will get better or even go away. I don’t really one hundred percent agree with this as some people have acne that won’t go away even when treated.
Despite the fact that I think the information in the book is informative and really worth checking out, there are a few problems. Firstly, as I mentioned before, not all acne can be fixed by following these steps. Someone could follow all these tips carefully and still not see improvements. This however, isn’t really the author’s fault so it’s understandable and not really something he could change. Unfortunately, there are a few typos throughout the book like the misspelling of severe on page 24. I understand that errors can be missed when proof reading. When a book is published though, it should definitely be pretty much perfect in terms of errors because of people spell checking it before publication.
I would definitely recommend that other people check out this work. Of course, people that suffer from acne will probably find it way more useful than people who don’t. As someone who does get acne sometimes, I found these tips tremendously helpful and will probably try out the ones I wasn’t aware of before. Basically, if you know the struggle of waking up with acne, checking out this book would definitely be beneficial. Overall, despite the few bad things I mentioned earlier like writing errors, it was a well-put together book and well worth the time it takes to read it.
