Why God allows pain and suffering written by Sine Nomine (translated from Latin `without a name`) is a philosophical study on essential themes of Christianity such as sin, pain, justice and love.

In the book the writer attempts to explain and answer one of the most mystical existential problems humanity is facing and it is doing so strictly within the framework of Christian doctrine, namely if God is omniscient and omnipotent, why is there pain and suffering in the world.

The structure and organization of the book is similar to Hegel's classical work on logical structure. In the first part of the book the author states the thesis, according to which God is all-powerful, loving, just and wise. He unfolds these concepts and supports them by logical reasoning. For example, what is a loving or friendly relationship and what kind of criteria must be met for the relationship to fall within the scope of either of these concepts. In the second part, the author sets up the antithesis by reflecting on the human experience before and after the Fall. It raises the question of whether the first humans acted sinfully despite their lack of knowledge of the difference between right and wrong. After the Fall, humanity had the chance to experience both states of selfishness and selflessness, which allowed room for independent decision making and experiencing a range of different emotions. In the synthesis, the author draws a conclusion about true happiness, our value system, faith and love.

Sine Nomine's book is short, but it contains many deep and precious insights. Although it is a philosophical and theological testimony, its language is easy to understand. However, it is worth reading slowly and even reading more than once in a lifetime. It can be felt that lot of work and research has gone into it, and it is backed with numerous quotations from both the Old and New Testament. Furthermore, it contains citations from other thinkers and includes a study about human happiness as well. I really liked that it emphasizes the main message and gives a positive perspective on the bad things going on in the world. As a non-believer one of my favorite insights was that without faith and trust there is no real love. I am so glad that it reminded me of the importance of having faith that events in our lives are leading us towards spiritual growth. Furthermore, it helped me remember that we need to have trust in ourselves and in our fellowships as well.

I would recommend the book to those who like philosophy and have an interest in existential issues. It is a well-researched and engaging work based on logical reasoning, therefore it is also suitable for non-believers and non-Christians too. I absolutely liked it. Moreover, the book has been professionally edited so I give it a perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
