Review of Niching Up
This book gives us a comprehensive idea on the subject of Niching up where Niching up means moving forward from abundance and growth into a more specialized field. The writer explains that it feels like getting off a cliff sometimes like entering into scarcity, fear opportunities, less ability to grow business yet in reality it provides opportunities and gives optionality. He addresses the potential pros and cons of niching in Chapter 1 with pros that include: having greater awareness of the opportunities to make choice, gaining expertise through hours of practice thus sets you apart in your field, ability to charge premium prices because people feel you’ve invested more time in becoming an expert and therefore they’re willing to pay more for it, more easily converting prospects to clients because you better understand your niche audience, having better relationships with those in your industry thus more goodwill, getting and giving more referrals, which means helping more people, and becoming more efficient as you develop repeatable processes designed to help you and your clients.
He goes ahead to expose the cons that exist such as; Smaller market, fewer buyers because the ability to target an audience is constrained by the choice of niche, Waste due to high cost to connect to target audience since traditional marketing methods are not helpful, Competition invoked once you excel in the field, Monotony and lack of diversity in what and who you handle, Industry risk whereby certain disasters like covid affect the running of business as well technological shift that can render a service or product obsolete, Product perfection that must be attained and sustained to keep the target clients, Buyers must make increased effort and sacrifice to buy your niche yet they have a variety of things to purchase that arent with you in the same place, He goes deeper to explain how one can best utilize the pros to one’s advantage e.g awareness and expertise to determine premium pricing where he explains the need to broaden your awareness and get more experience that will help you make required decisions in choosing a niche and the when and how then once you do you get into expertise level then you seek relationships in your niche that get you referrals and as you master the field you become more efficient not necessarily through raising charges but figuring out cheaper ways to handle and have less waste. It's indeed an interesting trek through this subject with his own life experience in it to throw light into the different aspects
