Review of Niching Up
Chris Dreyer, in his book, Niching Up, defines niching up as “moving forward from a place of abundance and growth”. In the service industry, niching means the ability of a service provider to determine which clients can be served best and most efficiently. To accomplish this, one has to specialize in a specific area, as there is no room to fake it in a niche owing to the limited opportunities available. Chris warns that niching comes with its fair share of cons, including the smaller market share, lack of diversity, competition and resources that might go to waste in the process of niching. This, therefore, calls for one to have a wealth of experience before they niche up, taking into consideration their natural competency.
As a service provider in the industry, this book provided valuable insights. Chris uses various anecdotes to reinforce his points and break from the monotony of narration. The anecdotes also simplify the concept of niching, making the book accessible to readers from various business fields. The author has also substantiated his claims with references that readers can refer to and verify the data and statistics provided in the book.
Chris has provided testimonies about his experiences while niching and some of the challenges he endured. Readers will be able to adopt his strategies for customizing their solutions if they encounter similar setbacks. The inclusion of titles and subtitles in each chapter not only marked transitions from subsequent paragraphs but also hinted at the next subject of discussion, thereby hinting out the next content to readers.
This book is exceptionally edited, as I did not find a single error while reading. The questions in various sections will enable readers to make rational decisions in their own processes of niching up. This book invites readers to engage in active reading, which is what I love most about it. Chris’ honesty in revealing that niching is as subjective as it is objective makes this book a realistic guide since he does not just write theoretical ideas whose implementation may be difficult.
I recommend this book to business people who are considering niching up. Readers thinking of starting a business may also benefit from the strategies shared by Chris, which will help them decide whether niching up is a good idea for them or not. There is nothing I liked least in this book, which merits the maximum rating of five out of five stars.
