Review of Why God Allows Evil and Suffering
If there is a loving God, why is there so much evil and suffering in the world? Sine Nomine wrote the book Why God Allows Evil and Suffering to try to answer this age-old question. It is hard to have faith at times when evil and suffering happen. Bad things happen to good people is not the answer humans want to hear. This book describes God as an all-powerful and all loving God. The book is broken up into two parts. The first part redefines the ancient problem of evil, pain, and suffering. The second part of the book uses biblical principles from the first three chapters of Genesis to define creation, the fall, and a timeless being. This author also includes classical thinkers, such as St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and early philosophers. The book has in-depth reference to the theology of the Roman Catholic Church.
On a positive note, Sine Nomine treats all readers fairly. There are numerous interesting thoughts for the skeptic and atheist, as well as Christians. Love is described as the principal end for which God allows suffering. This by itself does not make sense. We would not let our children suffer because we have unconditional love for them. But in the book, the author, describes in detail the concept of love being between at least two individuals who are willing to give and take for each other. All humans have the desire for companionship with others. We receive love and in return give love back. If we do not give love back, then we are selfish, and evil begins. From the book of Genesis, Adam and Eve had this perfect love until the fall. The introduction of knowledge of good and evil brought suffering, pain, and evil into the world. Now, it is true that this may not seem fair. But it is the effect of their sin that was imposed on every form of life at all time and space. Sine Nomine suggests that the suffering of the innocent stems from the sins of Adam and Eve.
One negative I found in reading this book is that most all the theology was from the Romans Catholic Church. This may not be considered a negative, but I felt there should have been more theology across the Christian denominations. There is so much negative in this world about God allowing suffering and pain. That is understandable but keeping faith helps us get through difficult times. This book proposes that our suffering, pain, and evil is present because of sin. Sin is the reason, not God punishing humankind. God's love helps us endure all. I cannot imagine what it would be like if I did not have faith.
I am pleased to give Why God Allows Evil and Suffering by Sine Nomine 4 out of 4 stars. This book is so well written. I did not find any obvious misspellings or punctuation errors. The subject is rather difficult, and the author made sense of it all, and explained the content so well.
I recommend this book to every adult. It is especially beneficial for those with the knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church, but I believe any Christian would understand the book fully. The first part of the book is a good read for everyone and will give the skeptic and atheist curiosity to read the rest.
