Traditions play a key role, but sometimes they necessitate change to fit reality. E. Alan Fleischauer, a financial planner, created a program to address the chasm between reality and the traditional 'number-oriented plan’ to fit the reality of retirement planning. Fleischauer’s ‘Reconfigurement’ explicates the intricately woven specifics of retirement planning and assists individuals to plan ahead.

‘According to research, the average American spends more than 90,000 hours working towards retirement but fewer than 10 hours planning for it—yet another reason to plan ahead.’ Fleischauer uses this statement to underline the importance of effective retirement planning. A major chunk of Fleischauer’s retiring clients refer to retirement as a late-life crisis. The author points out that the Greek word for ‘crisis’ stands for ‘turning point’ and gives readers positive assurance.

Various topics that contribute to an effective retirement plan are spread throughout the book. Career assessment tests are the need of the hour for every adult, and they have been neatly discussed in the book. The author also provides various websites where these tests can be taken. Throughout the book, the author gives us an occasional breather from the mind-boggling wealth of information ranging from (and not limited to) disability insurance to 529 plans. Some of the information provided in the book appalled me, and I was glad to finally get to know them. For instance, if one does not have an heir or a will in place, the state takes the entire assets of the individual. Quite shocking, I must say.

The author’s conversational writing style is refreshing. While topics such as mutual funds, index bonds, Medicare and Medicaid, social security, 401(k), and IRAs can result in boredom for some of the readers, the author effectively counteracts that with humor and wit. I have amassed indispensable information on retirement planning through this book.

This book is brilliantly edited, as I found no typos or grammar errors. Though the author mentions an ideal age in the description, I feel every adult is eligible to read this book as it educates them. Though some of the topics do not strike a chord with non-Americans, the other topics serve as a treasure to them. There is nothing in the book that I dislike. For all the above reasons, I give this book a rating of 5/5.
