Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream For Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah has got to be the most touching, exciting, and revealing memoir that I have ever read. Dr. Ghoulem Berrah was a principal figure in the Algerian liberation struggles from French occupation, a close friend and diplomat serving under President Houphouët-Boigny of Ivory Coast, and a renowned scientist. From his early days as an Algerian freedom fighter, the author was deeply motivated by the dream of seeing all oppressed people around the world free. The author’s thirst for global peace and religious harmony, brilliant scientific career, and integrity were much appreciated and coveted by those who crossed his path. Having been solicited by President Houphouët-Boigny, a like-minded person, to serve as his advisor in the newly independent Ivory Coast, the author saw the invitation as a unique opportunity to help in crafting the interior and foreign policies of Ivory Coast, which, for some years, became a model of economic prosperity and religious harmony in Africa. Much of this book details the author’s intimate relationship with President Houphouët-Boigny and their shared cause for global peace, such as their multiple diplomatic overtures on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or the South African Apartheid.
From humble beginnings in an iconoclastic Algerian village to leading a faction of the Algerian struggle for independence and abandoning his scientific career to fight for Africa’s sovereignty and prosperity, the author’s selflessness and determination radiate through every page of this book. Despite being on the receiving end of blatant racism when growing up, the author never nurtured hatred towards his former oppressors; all he wanted was freedom for his African people. The author’s life is exemplary and anything but boring. Some of the author’s accounts feel like a script from an action movie, like his youthful days as a fugitive with his girlfriend. The author’s love stories felt like stories from a romance novel, with the attendant in-laws’ drama. The best part of this book is the beautiful and colourful pictures of wedding events, historical encounters between influential figures, scientific papers, and diplomatic exchanges that tell a vivid story of the highlights of the author’s life and the African continent.
I rate this book five stars out of five. It was professionally edited, with no instances of profanity or sexual content. There are some references to violent content related to the multiple armed struggles of the post-colonial era. I enjoyed the author’s compelling narrative style and the photos from his personal and professional life. There is absolutely nothing I disliked about this book. I recommend this book to people of all religions, especially African readers, to help them discover the lives of two influential figures in African history.
