[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "A Pirates Guide to Strategic Leadership" by Dr. Don Thomas.]
When the word pirate is mentioned, the only things that cross our minds are lawless and greedy fellows, but this is not the case for Dr. Don Thomas. Besides the negative side, Thomas sees admirable organization and leadership of pirates’ worth to be emulated in the business world. In his book A Pirate’s Guide to Strategic Leadership, Don Thomas compares pirates to business leaders, and just like pirates implement tactics to navigate in the seas, so should entrepreneurs also develop strategies to sail in the high seas of business successfully. The book details some of the pirate’s qualities—embracing risks, crew inclusivity, etc.—that business masters must emulate for a successful business.
When we were all condemning pirates, the author saw something unique in them. That is one striking feature of the book. The deep thinking and creativity of the author make the book compelling and worth the time. The comparisons between obstacles in the seas faced by pirates and those faced in the business world were perfectly executed. Such include the emergence of uncertainty that requires quick and critical thinking.
Furthermore, the book teaches several key aspects of developing and maintaining a business. The author delves deep into aspects like focus, teamwork, long-term visions, resilience, and embracing risks, among others. He uses real-life examples of big names in the business world, like Elon Musk, Jack Ma, Mary Barra, and Howard Schultz, among others, to show the fruits of service leadership. From the lessons in the book, readers who have been struggling with keeping their businesses relevant in the ever-fluctuating market will be fully set to conquer.
I have to commend the editors of this book for their exceptional editing. The book had no negatives to comment on. Therefore, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. The book will benefit mostly business leaders or anyone aspiring to venture into business.
