Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book is a more concise version of Kalliope Barlis’ Play Golf Better Faster: From Weekend Golfer to Pro Golfer in Two Years with a little extra material. It approaches golf from a Neuro-Linguistic Programming stance, with Barlis’ techniques evolving from lessons provided by Chuck Hogan. According to the guide, golf should be approached with a single-minded focus and a steely positivity. Spending money on expensive equipment is unnecessary; one should practice and reflect on one’s swing, motions, and tactics to improve their overall game.

I liked that there were several notes that prefaced the main body of the book, putting the guide into perspective and instructing readers on how to tackle the contents. It was relieving and refreshing to see Barlis state point-blank that expensive equipment was not the way to go. Instead, she advocates setting a goal and working ardently towards it, keeping the focal concepts of the book in mind.

Furthermore, the practical tools included will serve its readers in good stead. The division of the book into parts facilitates rereading and helps readers refer to specific areas of relevance. I love that golf was tackled primarily from a mental standpoint; indeed, approaching anything with the appropriate mindset and strategies is a recipe for success. Afterwards, more practical tips and techniques were given, making it an actionable and practical solution to mastering one’s golf game. I also appreciated that Barlis didn’t get bogged down with golf terminology, taking into account her audience.

The pages were spaced considerably, with a large enough font that made reading an easy feat. The format was appealing, with clear organization and a distinct segmenting of the main ideas. This feeds into the previous statement about making it easy for readers to double back to topics of concern. Even Barlis mentions that this book is to be kept on hand during practice, an accessory to the rest of one’s golf equipment. Additionally, illustrations made visualizing some of the examples more clearly, which I was thankful for.

This was a very quick read, completed in under two hours. While not normally an issue for novel-length stories, the fact that this book had several errors calls the editing quality into question. Nevertheless, it did not reach the threshold of what is normally considered un- or non-professional editing.

All in all, five out of five stars seems like a fitting rating for Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book. It delivers on its promise and intention, doing so in a clear-cut manner that fulfils its purpose as a guidebook despite having some errors. I’d recommend it to individuals with an interest in golf—especially those who want to become PGA or LPGA players—and those who want to touch up their game with foolproof methods.
