Sarah Newcomb’s Loaded takes a look into the psychology of money. Why do we buy the things we do and what impact does it have on our life? Why is it so hard to obtain financial security? Why does there never seem to be enough money? Why is budgeting so painful? Financial questions may differ from person to person, but we all have them. Loaded gives invaluable insight into the way money works on us emotionally. If you feel unsatisfied with the way your money is working for you, then this book is for you. If you have a love/hate relationship with money, then read this book. If you think of money as a necessary evil, then stop what you are doing right now and buy this book! It will change your life!

I feel inadequate to write a review that does justice to this book. Without a doubt, it is the best financial book I have ever read. Many books talk about money and give great tools and tips on how to budget, but few give you the tools needed to change your thoughts about budgeting. I felt little light bulbs going off in my head as I read this book. I did not want it to end. There is such important information in it and I love how it applies to anyone regardless of how much or little money they have.

This book is organized well and written in a way that is easy to understand. The author gives clear and concise examples that are interesting and helpful. She also includes things like charts and exercises that help you put into practice what you are learning. It also seems to be professionally edited and I did not notice any grammatical errors.

Loaded covers so many different areas of financial psychology, that I can not begin to list them all. However, I will share my favorite part. There is a section where the author discusses the popular “need vs want” topic. Since I face this topic in my own life every day, I inwardly groaned when she introduced the subject. I thought I was going to be told that if I have food, clothing, and shelter, then my needs were met. Boy, was I wrong! It is not often that I get thrown for a twist in a nonfiction book, but this one surprised me several times. I can not explain how liberating this book is for me. I not only understand so much more about myself and why I do things like splurge, but I also learned what to do to keep myself from splurging in the first place. It all starts with recognizing the needs we have.

This book earns a perfect 4 out of 4 stars from me because….well, it’s perfect. I do not usually recommend books to everyone, but this is definitely a book that any and everyone can benefit from. Money affects us all. Most of us have never taken financial classes or learned about money psychology and make poor money choices on a regular basis (whether we realize it or not). Loaded is a book that everyone needs to read. Trust me you won’t have buyer’s remorse on this one!

Your enthusiasm about this book has definitely piqued my interest. A psychology book about money is something we can all periodically use refreshers on, most likely. Nice review!

Thank you for your enthusiastic review...great job! This sounds like a book I would like to read. Financial psychology? I have never heard this term before. Like you, I like that the book isn't just about lauding or shaming readers for their financial choices. So often, financial books just end up doing a textual version of a rolled up newspaper to a misbehaving dog! That turns me off and I don't even want to finish reading. I will be putting Loaded on my To Read list.

I agree! One of the things I loved about this is that the author makes it clear that if a budget is painful for you then it isn't going to work long-term. (Kind of like dieting). I had never heard of financial psychology either, which is crazy because it is actually really important!
