Dating is tough these days and one can never know how terrible a date will go. In 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir, Poppy Mortimer recounts her most disastrous dates spanning two decades. Being a romantic at heart and liking strong masculine men, Poppy discovered just how terrible her dates could be. From men with big egos, bad hygiene, and zero protective instincts to men with anger issues, manipulative ways, and unwanted sexual advances, this book will have any reader laughing hard, being horrified and plain disgusted at some of these men and their behaviors. For each date, Poppy first describes how she met the man and got asked out or did the asking, then the description of the date and how it was disastrous, and the end contains what Poppy learned from that date.

While the book is mostly funny, Poppy also points out the patriarchal ways of men and how she was always polite, putting another person's comfort over her own. Reading about the moments when she stood up for herself and didn't tolerate being treated badly was inspiring. Other than being really funny, Poppy is also ambitious and business-minded so I enjoyed the small mentions of her dreams and how she achieved them.

I really liked this book and found Poppy to be humourous in the way she described her disastrous dates. The names of her different dates were also a nice and funny touch. I appreciated that the dates that may disgust or trigger those who've experienced unwanted sexual advances or verbal abuse came with a little warning at the beginning to alert the reader of what's to come. This was very thoughtful of Poppy, and I appreciated the warning.

I didn't notice any errors while reading the book so it's clear that it was well-edited. I've got nothing to criticize about it, I enjoyed reading it and this is why I'm rating it five out of five stars. I recommend 28 Disastrous Dates to women who've had disastrous dates and would like to feel less alone and to anyone else looking for a funny read.
