Bridging the Gap: Returning to God by Dr. Kimberly Sprawling is a religious nonfiction book that serves as a call to come to God. It details ways to do this, such as praying, reading the Bible, praise and worship, and having faith. Sprawling also breaks down how to search and read the Bible effectively and explains how the books of the Bible are grouped, with the Old Testament divided into law, history, poetry, and prophecy, and the New Testament divided into four gospels, history, letters, and prophecy.

When I first started reading this book, I thought it would also include stories from the author’s life or personal anecdotes about her Christian journey and how she returned to God, especially since she briefly mentioned it at the beginning of the book. But they are not included, and the book reads more like a sermon. This observation is only a personal opinion of what I’d have liked to see in the book and isn’t a negative aspect because it didn’t detract from my reading experience. I like that the book doesn’t just preach about coming closer to God but gives practical examples on how to do so, especially the breakdown of how to read the Bible. I also liked that Sprawling backed her message with different passages from the Bible. Bridging the Gap: Returning to God is a short but heart-piercing read.

Unfortunately, I found over ten errors, indicating poor editing, especially for a book of its length. As a result, I will give it a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. A more in-depth round of editing and proofreading would elevate this splendid book to a 5-star rating. I’ll recommend this book to Christians who have lost their way or need a reminder of the loving and forgiving nature of God.
