Review of First Survivor
Life, they say, is filled with lots of challenges, and most of the time, what it serves us is the least we expect, leaving us most of the time perplexed. In a situation like this, all we can do is pray and hope that God takes control, as he is the author and finisher of our faith. The book titled First Survivor by Mark Unger tells the journey of the Unger family in a very difficult situation with their son Louis.
It all began towards the end of August 2001, when Mary Ellen noticed that her child Louis was walking abnormally. Though Louis was quieter than his older brother Harry, who was two years older than him, he suddenly started being less talkative. Mark's wife took their son to see their paediatrician, Dr. Gregory Germain, and after being referred to Dr. Tom Renshaw, a paediatric orthopedist, they diagnosed Perthes disease after physical examinations and X-rays. After Louis started attending nursery school, there were new developments, and when they reached the hospital, they said that he had cancer, probably leukaemia. This is where the dreadful journey of this three-year-old and his family began, and getting a copy of this book would give you first-hand enlightenment.
This was a very sentimental book for me, and after this reading experience, I was touched, and I liked a lot about this book. For example, Louis' mother was a strong woman; she could hold her family together despite the situation. She was also a very supportive wife. It was also a good idea for Mark to document the details of these events. The fact that they went for the best doctors was thoughtful of them, as they were ready to do anything for their child. The book enlightened me about some perplexing medical terms like ALL, AML, metastasize, superior vena cava catheter, embryonic stem cell, and others.
I had absolutely nothing to dislike in this book, and I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I also encountered no errors while reading, which proves the book was edited perfectly, and I commend the editor. I recommend this book to families out there who may be in such difficult situations, as this would serve as a source of motivation.
