Review of 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir
Name of the book: 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir
Author’s name: Poppy Mortimer
Summary: The book ‘28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir’, written by Poppy Mortimer, is a memoir of the author’s troubled, exciting and amusing dating life. Poppy is a smart, attractive, and optimistic woman. To satisfy her hunger for finding her other half, Poppy finds herself on numerous first dates with different dates. In this book, the author pens down her experience of different dates that turned horrible and the lessons she has learned from them. After every date, she found out about herself, what she is comfortable with, and what not. After these 28 gone-wrong dates, she feels uncertain about the hopes she gained from Disney fairy tales. Poppy’s writing style in this book is fun, witty, engaging, and hilarious. Through the book, I came to know that the author is close to her home and shares an easy relationship with her mother. She made sure that at the end of every chapter, she wrote a note to herself and her readers about what she learned from this date. It seems that through every date, she understood her priorities and what she wanted from her dates. This one sentence stuck with me when she says ‘Any behavior a man displays in front of me means one day that behavior will be directed at me.’ I find it very attractive when people show signs of being proud of their roots. The author, being English, sticks to the politeness she was brought up with.
Positive: One thing that I have learned from this memoir is that one should not be sad about the past experience they had had. Of course, it's easier said than done, but at least this is what Poppy has described through this book. The author has a great sense of humor, and throughout the book, I came to know that she would love a perfect date with a funny guy and chilled vibe. I was very interested as one chapter ends and the other comes because of the name of the chapters given upon guys’ character. To put it this way, the names of the chapters are opposite to or similar to the behavior of the guys she spent a day with. I found it interesting and creative.
Negative: As this book was written with the perspective of a female protagonist, of course, it contains a description of the guys as she found it. I found many things that I found to be disrespectful towards a woman. But this is sure not author’s mistake because this book was about her experiences. Other than this, I didn’t find anything in the book that could be put into this section of the review.
Rating and Justification: I would rate this book a 5 out of 5 because of numerous times it has made me laugh. I find it interesting to read witty content because it automatically makes it funny. The hilarious incidents described in the book add to it.
Recommendation: I would recommend this book to someone who likes books on relationships, relationship advice, dating, and social media. The general reading audience interested in comedy will like this book as well. This book is a must for young fellows and teenagers looking for their true love and trying to find it through dating apps prevailing these days. You could find a piece of advice or two in the book.
Errors: I didn’t find any errors in the book while reading it. It is exceptionally edited.
