As a survivor of early childhood sexual abuse, there have been many times in my life when I have struggled with how to reconcile the pain and suffering that survivors endure as a result of the cruel and evil actions of others with the existence of an omnipotent God, especially the suffering of innocent children. After all, if God were all-powerful as described, why would He not choose to exercise that power to prevent His beloved creations, humans, from experiencing pain and suffering? At times, living with the consequences of being traumatized or being an abuse survivor can be almost unbearable due to experiencing depression and self-destructive thoughts and behaviors as a result. In being omniscient or all-knowing, our creator already possessed the knowledge that humans would inevitably abuse their free will to achieve their own selfish objectives by causing others to suffer. So, why not create them to be blindly obedient?
The author, Sine Nomine, does an excellent job tackling this theological dilemma with his book, "Why God Allows Evil and Suffering." By utilizing both Christian Bible references and the Catholic Catechism as his main resources to corroborate the explanation presented and bring clarity to what might be a confusing topic to some. By using an extensively researched, well-written, and comprehensive approach, he is able to propose this possible explanation in a thought-provoking and concise manner.
I would highly suggest "Why God Allows Evil and Suffering" to any abuse or trauma survivors who may be struggling to gain understanding, as it could encourage them on their journey toward healing. Mental health professionals may also benefit their patients by recommending this book as a powerful tool in their clients' quest for clarity on this subject. I recommended this book to my own personal therapist, who has already begun to suggest it to more of her clients. I'm hopeful that its awareness and use are increased as the knowledge of its existence is shared throughout the mental health professional community.
