Review of 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir
28 Disastrous Dates by Poppy Mortimer is a humorous book on only twenty-eight of the author’s many dates with men that took a disastrous turn. One by one of these men, whom she mainly met on online dating apps, were not what she expected. One was much shorter than her, and one had rotten teeth. Number 4 - Mr. Fodder wanted to fatten her up so she wouldn’t leave him. Number 7 - Mr. Yogi had blisters on his hands from all his sexual energy ten-plus times a day. Number 10 - Mr. Muscles passed obnoxious gas every few seconds. Number 23 - Mr. Rich Guy, Poor Guy, showed up in a stained jogging suit and said he forgot his wallet, so she had to pay for the date. Number 24 - Mr. Third Wheel brought his dog and paid more attention to the dog than to her, and she felt like the third wheel. She even went on a speed dating event where a guy told her she was his soulmate! It went on and on. Some dates were hilarious, and some were scary. She started a successful dog-walking business and also became a business consultant. Please read the book to discover all of the dates and how Poppy handed each escapade. She also lists dating lessons at the end, so the book is educational, too.
I loved this book! It was amusing, interesting, scary, and almost unbelievable at times. I cannot imagine what goes on in the minds of men and how they think they can pull off a profile and photos that are totally different from reality. I have never been on a dating app, but I know people who have. I only know of one success story. The others have been disastrous! The dating world is not what it used to be, and I don’t know how I would handle it if I had to enter it again.
The author, Poppy Mortimer, was fluent in her writing of the book. It was easy to read and understand and gave you a chuckle every other page or so. I am happy to give this book 5 out of 5 stars. If you like to read a humorous and light book, this book is for you. Even though the author does not want to use profanity, some situations in the book are “for adults only.” I only hope that, by now, the author has found the one that she was meant to be with and is living happily ever after.
