First Survivor by Mark Unger chronicles the compelling journey of his son's courageous battle against cancer. This gripping story of resiliency, optimism, and the steadfast drive of a family refusal to accept an inevitable fate is not your typical tale about illness and despair.

The book explores the world of Louis Unger, a brave three-year-old whose life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. In the quiet rhythm of their daily lives, the Unger family's world is abruptly shattered when they confront the harsh reality of Louis's condition. In the face of this abrupt upheaval, Mary Ellen and Mark Unger emerge as pillars of unwavering love and dedication for both their sons. Driven by the love of a father, Mark dives into the depths of research, searching the medical community for facilities that have previously dealt with this specific type of cancer. Louis battles cancer head-on, emerging from each treatment of chemotherapy, surgery, and the seemingly never-ending days of uncertainty not as a victim but as a determined survivor who overcomes all odds and embraces every success with unwavering tenacity.

The author’s notes, which meticulously detail the events as they happened, provide witness to their vulnerability and raw emotions throughout the stressful period. The graduation photograph, where Louis stands alongside his parents, radiates strength and resilience, offering a powerful testament to the human spirit's ability to endure and overcome even the most daunting obstacles. Including a glossary at the book's conclusion, elucidating the complexities of medical terminology is a thoughtful and invaluable addition. Through the narrative, readers gain a profound appreciation for the relentless efforts and expertise of medical professionals who stand on the front lines of the fight against cancer.

I found the book to be as heartbreaking as it is inspiring. Mark uses clear and simple language, making it easy for readers to comprehend. The book was professionally edited. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to individuals confronting cancer or serving as caregivers to those on this challenging journey. I did not find anything to dislike about the book. I rate the book five out of five stars.
