Poppy Mortimer takes readers on a wild ride through some of her most horrendous dates, as the title implies. This book does not disappoint! It is full of wit and important life lessons, especially for the daters among us.
One of the best parts of this book is the incredible voice the author has and how it shines through on every page. From the beginning, readers will feel like this is a friend commiserating with them about some truly outrageous date behavior. Poppy has a fun and outgoing personality that is easily relatable, and she is a great storyteller. There are personal stories about Poppy’s life outside of dating interwoven throughout the book that complete the circle of Poppy as a real person living real experiences. It’s all the more reason readers are able to empathize with her.
Another great aspect of this book is the formatting. Each date story begins with a time and a place, as well as an explanation of how the date came to occur. This is a fantastic way to set up each chapter, but Poppy doesn’t stop there. She also blends each story in seamlessly from the last. It creates a beautiful flow that makes the book difficult to put down. At the end of each date story, she explains what she learned from the date and how she plans to carry that forward. She also provides trigger warnings where necessary, which is appreciated!
Overall, this book is a wonderful quick read and exemplifies some awesome storytelling (and some horrifying dating behavior). Poppy uses rich imagery and lots of wit to win over her audience. There is really something to be gained for men and women alike in reading these tales. If nothing else, it provides many examples of what NOT to do on a date.
I give this book a 5/5. This book was a fun read and was perfectly edited. (I will note that some Americans may mistake incorrect spelling as the book is not written in American English)
