Vance and the Vances is an urban internet sci-fi fantasy book by Joe Paul. He tells the tales of a young man with extraordinary traits called Vance. Vance is bestowed the supernatural ability to heal any wound or scar in his body. He was the only one aware of this special yet rare gift and did a great job obscuring it from everyone. When his parents find out, they take it as a chance to salvage their financial situation at the expense of their son. They do this, disregarding the possible consequences. How far is too far?

The book starts when Jim Clarks, a 22-year-old aspiring journalist, finds a journal while photographing the debris and rubble of what used to be Harold and Glenda's old house. This journal would open his eyes to another world and possibly lead him to locate Vance, the journal's author. The entries are otherworldly. Jim takes it upon himself to investigate what this means.

I loved how the author maintained suspense throughout the book. From the beginning, he sets out to bring the reader into a world of possibilities. He explores the potential of the human body while preserving a sense of wonder for the reader. He brings in discussions around biology. A reader with a keen interest in sciences will find the book charming. The book includes themes of betrayal, drug abuse, child abuse, misuse of the internet, etc.

The only downside was in the character development. I felt that the author did not adequately develop the characters. I felt there would have been more to their story in regard to their thoughts, aspirations, and personalities. I would have appreciated a background story about Harold and Glenda to comprehend their thought processes.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I could not give it a perfect score due to the above dislike. However, it is definitely a book worth adding to your bookshelf as it will challenge you to think outside the box.

"Vance and the Vances" by Joe Paul is a unique urban sci-fi fantasy. It follows Vance, a young man with a special healing ability, and Jim, an aspiring journalist who discovers Vance's journal. The book explores intriguing themes and scientific concepts, although character development could be better. Despite this, it's a thought-provoking read that encourages thinking outside the box.
