Niching Up is a non-fictional informative book. It is a guide to a successful niche business. The writing style is very captivating.

Most people think the best way to succeed in business is to target the largest market instead of limiting your customer base.

To choose a niche is the opposite; it means targeting a specific segment of consumers who share characteristics that make them likely to buy a particular product or service. In a niche market, the businesses are small, have a specific clientele, and charge premium rates. One could cite the case of a sushi restaurant (compared to a large food chain such as McDonald). The sushi restaurant is small and appeals to people who like sushi.

The author, Chris Dreyer, uses his own business as a case study to demonstrate what is involved in the process. He offers guidance on choosing a niche and making the business successful. For him, the narrower the market, the bigger the prize. One of the conditions to make your niche successful is to become an expert in that specific field. The book explains how to become an expert. When you are an expert, your clients are more willing to pay a higher fee because they trust that you can achieve the outcome they want. With higher fees comes high revenue. Other conditions for success include building relationships and creating values. The book cites many reliable resources. You will find many examples and popular references, together with narrations of the author’s own stories. At the end of the book, you will have a clearer picture of what niching is about. You will be convinced that it has more advantages than disadvantages.

Chris Dreyer was a full-time basketball coach and detention supervisor in a high school. To pass the time and earn a few bucks, he started doing affiliate marketing as a side hustle. His first website (loseadoublechin.com) started as a joke. He will later realize that he was good at it. He went on to create more than 80 websites. Currently, he is the CEO and founder of a search engine optimization agency that develops and optimizes websites for attorneys who specialize exclusively in personal injuries. This is his niche business. He is also a podcast host.

I enjoyed many aspects of this book. It is insightful without being a step-by-step guide. The author is a good storyteller, he uses a conversational tone to relay his message. He never strikes the reader as imposing; as he noted, niching will work better for some than others. The book is short with 146 pages. The airy content is clear and concise; this made it easy to navigate through. You will not find many technical words, and you will not need to run to the dictionary all the time. This book is well-structured, starting with an insightful and captivating introduction. I was surprised that his first chapter was about the cons of niching up. It shows that the author is confident that the pros will outweigh the cons, and he doesn’t fear losing the reader from the beginning of the book.

I loved reading this book and I learned so many valuable lessons in the process. I don't have anything negative to mention here. A perfect rating of 5 out of 5 stars is well deserved, nothing less.

Niching Up by Chris Dreyer is meant for a broad audience, including entrepreneurs and prospective businesspeople. It is for you if you are someone with a specific talent, or with an aspiration to assist others, but you are too shy or fearful to start your own business. Should you aspire to own a business, but you don’t want to be out there competing with the giants in the broader market, I strongly recommend you read it.
