Review of First Survivor
Life is often described as a journey filled with numerous challenges, and more often than not, it presents us with unexpected trials, leaving us bewildered. In such moments, our recourse is to offer prayers and entrust ourselves to God, the ultimate author and finisher of our faith. Mark Unger's book, "First Survivor," narrates the arduous journey of the Unger family facing a challenging situation with their son, Louis.
The narrative commences in late August 2001, when Mary Ellen observed abnormal walking patterns in her son Louis. Despite being quieter than his elder brother Harry, Louis underwent a sudden transformation into a less talkative child. Seeking medical advice, Mark's wife consulted their pediatrician, Dr. Gregory Germain, who, upon referral to Dr. Tom Renshaw, a pediatric orthopedist, diagnosed Louis with Perthes disease following physical examinations and X-rays. As Louis began attending nursery school, new developments surfaced, leading to a hospital visit where the devastating revelation of probable leukemia emerged. Thus, the harrowing journey of this three-year-old and his family unfolded, offering profound insights when delving into the pages of this enlightening book.
Personally, this book resonated deeply with me, evoking sentimental emotions. The touching aspect was Louis' mother, a resilient and supportive woman who held her family together amidst the challenging circumstances. Mark's decision to document the intricate details of these events was commendable. Opting for the best medical professionals showcased the Unger family's unwavering commitment to doing everything in their power for their child. The book not only sheds light on the family's journey but also provides clarity on perplexing medical terms such as ALL, AML, metastasize, superior vena cava catheter, embryonic stem cell, and more.
In my reading experience, I found nothing to dislike in this book, warranting a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The flawless editing, evident in the absence of errors, deserves commendation, and I extend my appreciation to the editor. I wholeheartedly recommend "First Survivor" to families grappling with similar challenging situations, as it serves as a profound source of motivation.
