Review of Black and Brilliant
In Black and Brilliant, Rodney L. Hurst Sr. unveils the often suppressed history of Black excellence and resilience demonstrated by numerous "Black and Brilliant" individuals. The author, born during a time when racism cast its long shadow over society, sheds light on the uncensored accomplishments of Black individuals who stood tall against oppression and pioneered marvelous inventions, developments, and growth.
Hurst's personal experiences, particularly highlighted by his transformative encounter with teacher and mentor Rutledge Henry Pearson at the segregated Negro Isaiah Blocker Junior High School, add a poignant touch to the narrative. It is remarkable to hear the history of Black excellence from one of the pioneers' own experiences. Pearson's dedication to teaching the unfiltered history of Black people became a catalyst for the author's change of perspective, sparking a lifelong commitment in Hurst to fight against racial injustice despite his young age.
Reading about Hurst's involvement in the Jacksonville Youth Council NAACP was inspiring, where he and his peers orchestrated impactful demonstrations, challenging segregation and ushering in a new era of integration. The account of their struggles, from sit-in demonstrations at the "whites only" lunch counters to campaigns for selective buying, resonates as a testament to the resilience and determination of "Black and Brilliant" individuals. Unlike the filtered mainstream media reports, the sit-in demonstrations were not mere gatherings for hotdogs and a Coke but a brutal confrontation of the suppressive segregationist and racist laws subjected to Black people at that time and the daily and constant harassment, systemic discrimination, bigotry, hate, and violence faced by Black people. It is brave of the author to tell the real truth of such events, made better by the fact that he experienced them firsthand.
Black and Brilliant explores the broader fight for equality, spotlighting "Black and Brilliant" figures like Thurgood Marshall, Constance Baker Motley, Philip Rudolph, and many others who played pivotal roles in shaping the world. It exposes the truth about the violence, hate, hardships, and ridicule endured by these individuals and himself in the pursuit of justice, such as the Ax Handle Saturday violence perpetrated by racist whites and the Ku Klux Klan, unlike what the media and books have distorted or hidden altogether.
I appreciate how Hurst compellingly advocates for acknowledging the dark and harrowing history of Black people. By bringing these stories to light, Black and Brilliant challenges the prevailing narrative and underscores the need to celebrate the resilience, brilliance, and indomitable spirit of Black individuals throughout history.
In my view, Rodney L. Hurst Sr.'s Black and Brilliant is an enlightening and empowering exploration of Black history, urging readers to confront uncomfortable truths while celebrating the triumphs of those who fought against injustice. I found no negative aspects or dislikes to mention, and for this reason, I award it 5 out of 5 stars. The editing quality is also excellent. This book is a must-read for everyone in pursuit of equality and ready to learn about the ills done in the past and anyone who feels the need for change and reparations.
