Review of Niching Up: The Narrower the Market, the Bigger the Prize by Chris Dreyer

I will give you a heads up: you’ll be able to read this and apply it faster than Mace Windu sweeping the crowd with his lightsaber. Even if you aren’t a nerd, the referrals to books, articles and practical advice given in this book are well worth your time.

I’m here to tell you why I enjoyed this read though. I chose to read this book because I am particularly interested in the concept of niching vs generalising. I was pleased with how this author unpacks both concepts and is quite open about the advantages and disadvantages of niching. He is not adamant that the reader follow through with niching and lets the reader determine this for themself. He is very clear about how niching has worked for him, and although it may not work for everyone, it certainly is a concept that works.

I thoroughly enjoyed the analogies the author used, from his nerdiness to his competitive gameplay. I find myself getting frustrated sometimes when an author rambles off with an analogy and it does not follow through on the main idea, or the analogy is so long that the main idea is lost (like this sentence). This is not the case with this book.

Although a short read and being about business, this book is quite personal. In describing events between his father and his wife, we are able to determine that there is congruency between his personal and business values. This is something I appreciate when reading business books because as a reader I am able to trust that the author is a leader with harmonious values, ethics and morals.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 for the above-mentioned comments. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quirky, informative read, especially if one is a little stuck on what the next step is for their side hustle or even main hustle. You will learn steps to apply, you will get some homework, and you will ultimately get to decide which Harry Potter character you’d most like to be.
