America went through political chaos during Donald Trump’s reign. Those five years impacted the country and the world economically, politically, and socially. The book examines how four foundational principles were breached in those years. The principals are respect for the Constitution, respect for the rule of law, commitment to rational governance, and conducting free and fair elections. Stress Test: How Donald Trump Threatens American Democracy is a collection of columns by William Cooper.

From the title, I was expecting some level of personal animosity towards Donald Trump. However, there was no indication of personal opinion or bias in the book. In fact, all the conclusions were derived from well-researched and reputable sources. The author's bottomless knowledge about politics was evident through the many references made to different books and studies. All of these sources were reputable and trustworthy. In addition to this, even while discussing such a controversial topic, the language remained easy. The complexities of the American political system were explained in simple terms that even international readers like me could easily understand. Also, I loved the refreshing quotes at the end and beginning of each chapter. William Cooper was unapologetic and did not fear to point a finger at anyone, irrespective of their status. Although the main topic of the book was Donald Trump, several other challenges facing American democracy were discussed. This saved the book from being monotonous and repetitive. My favorite chapter was Chapter Three: The People and the Press. It pointed out how little Americans knew about their own leaders and government. The book was professionally edited, with no errors that I could spot.

I recommend this book to political science students and teachers. If you want a well-researched breakdown of the events during the presidency of Donald Trump, this is the book for you. It is suitable for both teenagers and adults, but adults will comprehend it the most. Considering all the above arguments, I rate this book five out of five stars.
