John Gore was a government relations officer for British Petroleum and a long-time golfer. After a minor bump on the back of his neck turned out to be a case of the big C, many aspects of his life were impacted. "Stage Fright" is a memoir written by this multiple-time advanced-stage cancer survivor. It describes his healing journey and offers 15 rules for dealing with cancer.

This was a short memoir that got right to the point while remaining relatable. Gore described himself as someone who enjoyed golfing, and when the first symptoms of the illness appeared, he wondered if he would miss his golf trip. I liked his attitude because he never let bad news control his life. This positive attitude, combined with his sense of humor, made the book uplifting rather than depressing, as I had expected from a cancer book. It allowed him to tell the story from his own point of view, and he even simplified the medical terminology to make it easier to understand. He told funny stories about eating through a tube because he could not swallow after a laryngeal surgery. This made him want to taste something in his mouth, which he solved with his sip-and-spit method. I really enjoyed these little stories.

The 15 cancer-coping rules were sprinkled throughout the book. They were like little nuggets that involved keeping a positive attitude and accepting reality. These made sense to me, and I realized that some of them could be applied in everyday life. I believe you should not wait until you have a terminal illness to start updating your will. This book also showed how Toni, the author's wife, was always by his side. They developed a genuine affection for each other from their college days, and her common sense aided his battle several times.

The author's attempt to describe what he did for a living was my least favorite aspect of the book. He was a senior official at BP who was in charge of managing government relations. Even though the regulations, mergers, and other official aspects were only briefly described, I found them difficult to understand because they appeared abstract to me. This, however, is due to my limited knowledge of office procedures, which does not detract from the book's perfect 5 out of 5 rating. This book was thoroughly edited, as I discovered no errors while reading. I believe that anyone who wants to appreciate the small things in life will enjoy this book. It is entertaining and has at least one aspect that most adults can relate to.

It seems like "Stage Fright" is an uplifting and relatable memoir about a cancer survivor's journey, with a positive attitude and sense of humor. The author's personal experiences and simplified medical terms make it an enjoyable read, despite the heavy topic. The 15 cancer-coping rules provided throughout the book offer practical advice applicable to everyday life. The support of the author's wife adds depth to the story. The only drawback mentioned in the review is the brief description of the author's profession, which may be difficult to understand for some readers. Overall, it appears to be a highly recommended book with a perfect rating of 5 out of 5.

This review offers a succinct yet informative synopsis of the memoir, emphasizing its sympathetic story, upbeat attitude, and helpful coping mechanisms for cancer patients.

The reviewer remarks that the book is more upbeat than anticipated because of the author's optimistic outlook and sense of humor in the midst of hardship. It is acknowledged that the author's ability to clarify medical jargon for audiences and narrate his narrative from his own point of view has improved accessibility and engagement.

The reviewer especially appreciates the humorous vignettes, which lighten the mood and keep readers engaged. One such example is the author's creative method for tasting food following laryngeal surgery.

The book appears to be a handbook as much as a memoir. People in similar circumstances might find strength and drive from the practical advice provided from the author's life lessons.

This is a great review, Mayang! I also read and reviewed this brilliant book, and I agree that there are lessons in this book we can use in our daily life without needing a life-threatening cancer diagnosis. And I absolutely loved John's humour. For example, my favorite quote is in John’s Rule 3: “Think of all the things you hate, like taxes and anchovies, that you will no longer have to endure if you are no longer here.” It shines with life-asserting optimism. I also gave all stars to this unique book.
