Comedic expressions like "catfish," "coffin-dodger," "serial-swiper," "ghosting," and "hook-up hunter" are a part of today's dating scene and reflect the distinct culture and vocabulary associated with it. Everyone who wants to "play the field" must familiarize themselves with the rules, which have undergone a complete overhaul over the past two decades. It's not your parent's courtship. Welcome to the "Hunger Games" of dating!

In her laugh-out-loud book 28 Disastrous Dates, Poppy Mortimer gives a masterclass in what seems like pure fiction. The author narrates a side-splitting account of twenty-eight unforgettable dates that unfold across three continents and two decades. She embarks on a fresh chapter of her emotional and professional journey with every ridiculous story, frequently in different locations. Her work is a literary gem for those who appreciate the craft. Her choice of euphemisms instead of profanity adds a touch of civility to her writing. Through personification, she breathes life into her purse (Mary Poppins) and her car (Betty), adding a vibrant and engaging quality to the text. In addition, her clever wordplay and puns will whisk you away to the backdrop of a "Comedy Central" special.

I can't remember the last time I laughed so much. The book is outlandish, delectable, and astonishingly insightful. The author's witty and occasionally self-deprecating style makes her incredibly relatable, leaving you with an undeniable desire to be her friend. The chapters are titled after her dates, hinting at what lies ahead. My favorite dates included the man who requested to be locked in her kitchen cupboard, the guy who created his dating profile based on his future imagined self, and the "Roger Ram Jet" video call. I found myself mortified by her dead animal/dog poo story, impressed by the neuro-linguistic programming seduction, and having flashbacks of my own traumatic dates that I named in a similar fashion (Elf Hands, Mr. GQ, Mr. Animal House, and my own Mr. Protein). At one point, I wondered if she'd be better off donating blood to find her type! I patiently waited for her to embrace her emotionally feral self and go into "goblin mode." However, I'll have to wait for her teaser of a sequel.

One of my favorite aspects of this book is how the author takes time to reflect on her personal growth and self-discovery after each chapter and at the end. She approached dating with a curious and introspective mindset, using it to explore her identity and desires. She is a professional dating prophet, inspiring readers to embrace a new approach and reenter the dating scene as a pyromaniac looking for a match. The editing was meticulous, and I could find nothing to dislike about this book; it deserves a perfect 5 out of 5 stars for all these reasons.

If you're a single woman, this book is an absolute must! For single men who feel like their dating platforms are starting to resemble "OkStupid" and "Tinder Roulette," you may find some of these stories helpful in avoiding common pitfalls. Readers who don't appreciate sexual innuendo may want to swipe left!

From your spectacular review, this book sounds like it is a must-read. Comedic books are always a joy to read and you can never go wrong with a little self-deprecating humor. I appreciate people who can laugh — and teach others to do the same — at what are probably really frustrating situations. The book also seems to have a good mix of humor and seriousness in its introspectiveness, which is great. Just from the first line of your review — from the intriguing phrases that I've mostly not heard of — I'm drawn irresistibly to read this book.
Thank you for this excellent review.

Claudia, I could not stop laughing while reading this book! What made it even more funny was the fact that I was alone! I remember wanting to have a girlfriend nearby so we could laugh and share. I literally had mini-trauma recalling all my own worst dates, some of which rivaled hers! Do you remember your favorite date? Did you have any memories of especially bad dates? Thanks so much for reading my review and leaving me a comment, as always! Until next time...

Bettny, I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this book; I would have given it ten stars! While I knew single women would especially appreciate this book, I can't think of any woman who wouldn't get a good laugh out of it (unless they don't like sexual innuendos, of course). I was genuinely surprised that the author would wrap up each date/chapter with what she had learned about herself. Her insights were spot on for me and I had never thought to use dating as a learning experience. I've been on a nearly 3-year self-imposed dating sabbatical due to the misery of those dating experiences, and she almost makes me want to date again! I think you will enjoy reading this, too! I can't wait to read your review of it! Thanks for reading and leaving me a comment! Until next time...

Cara, I was reading reviews and sadly thought, "I wish I could find a lighter, humorous read." (I'm in great need of a bit of comic relief). Then, I see this funny review--BINGO! My prayers have been answered! :-D I'm single but I don't want to date; I want to laugh at other people who date! :lol2: I can tell from your enjoyment that this will be a fun read! I would love to read this book; it seems fun. Although the topic is about the worst dates, the author's way of expressing them makes the book interesting and laughable. I loved your apparent enthusiasm for the book, and I think it's contagious because I'll be putting it on my list. Refreshing and beautiful review, Cara!

Revathy, as a single woman, I thought I knew all the modern lingo, but I was wrong  The author taught me a few new words and phrases, and above all, she made me laugh harder and longer than I have in a long time! Her perspective was also particularly valuable to me because I have never encountered anyone who framed dating as a way of discovering oneself. I hope you do read this book, and I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my review and leave a thoughtful comment! Until next time...

Oh dear, we should begin writing our own version of the book! :lol2: I believe my worst dates were the ones where I didn't realize they were 'dates' until it was too late – quite classic 😂 Probably, I have been a disastrous date myself too! :oops2:
Have a great day :D

Runan, OH yes! I learned so much from the author's insights while having a solo-laugh-fest! There were a handful of "shocking" stories that make you think, "Who even does that?" or "He did what?"   Sometimes, it was just, "Run, girl! Run!" :animals-dogrun: Of course, the author had an inordinate amount of patience that more often resulted in kindness. Thank you for your exceptionally kind comments and for taking the time to read my reviews! Please tell me if you read this so that I can get your thoughts! Until next time...

Terry, I know that feeling! This is your book! I remember thinking exactly those thoughts after reading some somber and disturbing content (not a bad thing, but I imagine something changes inside of you if this is all you are exposed to!)...I'm like you, having been on a self-imposed dating hiatus for the last three years, but just be warned: after reading this, I had a spark of wanting to date again  The author has this wonderful way of framing dating and even providing some insight that I desperately needed to feel more in control of dating again. I can't say enough good things about this book or author - easily one of my top three reads from OBC! Your comments made my day - thank you so much for your support and engagement! :romance-heartbeating: Until next time...
