Review of I Am~The product of the mentally ill lonely monster~My journal
Brandy, born in 1977 as the third child in her family, suffered a lot under her father. Her siblings and her mother were not spared either. Her father exerted his rule on anyone there was, even neighbors and pets. He gave his children different forms of punishment, including electrocutions. The constant fear enacted on them affected the author, even as an adult, and even led her to develop phobias. Her father's death in 1989 seemed to be a relief. They had even joked about being free from the punishments after the father's death, but the events in her life were far from over. I Am~ The Product of the Mentally Ill Lonely Monster~ My Journal is Brandy's account of her suffering under her father, all she went through after her father's death, and the problems she underwent as an adult as a result of this.
I Am~ The Product of the Mentally Ill Lonely Monster~ My Journal by Brandy J. Rex is a great example of how generational trauma and childhood trauma can affect one's life. Even though Brandy tried to put safety measures around her family in her adult life, things were not getting any better. I like how she provides a background on her mother and father and her understanding of how wounded they could have been from their own experiences or past events. However, she mentions that this doesn't mean she has to suffer. Her father's alcoholism led to him sleeping during the day and staying awake at night. Brandy calls him a 'nocturnal creature' and this behavior causes havoc in the home.
At the beginning of this story, the mother's presence is not felt. She seemed to blend into the environment around them and only came alive at the mention of her name. Brandy later explains this situation, showing a good depiction of what pain and suffering can do to a person after a while. As a result of her childhood torment, Brandy learned the importance of values like perseverance, kindness, and compassion in people's lives.
Besides the lessons in this book, I loved the language and vocabulary used by the author. At the beginning, the book seems poetic, evoking a blend of the reader and the characters in the book. This transitioned into a language that depicted the different emotions throughout the book. Going through her life will have different effects on the reader. She shares her experiences with her family and with the COVID-19 pandemic.
I rate I Am~ The Product of the Mentally Ill Lonely Monster~ My Journal by Brandy J. Rex 4 out of 5 stars. This is a comprehensive summary of the life Brandy would like to share with others. The book is also professionally edited, with only a few errors noted. However, although the focus was on the author's experiences, it left out how her emotions and trauma affected others, especially her husband. This would be a good lesson for readers to learn. Additionally, I found that some information had been left out, especially with her adulthood transition. I also noted that one of the subtopics on reflection in the last chapter is written in plain text and merged with a preceding paragraph. This should be corrected, as it confuses the reader. These are minor negative aspects, and I deducted only one star.
Brandy believes every story to be relevant, helping her enable others to read hers. Her story will be an excellent way to help others who have gone through similar experiences heal. The healing journey may not be easy, but it helps to learn how to cope and move on in the best way possible. However, this book may contain some violent scenes that readers should know about. I recommend this book to those who have been broken due to different experiences and need a place where they feel understood and where to restart their journey.

The reviewer notes that despite continuous difficulties, Brandy makes an effort to provide safety measures for her family, and she values the author's investigation of the effects that generational and early trauma may have on an individual's life. They also praise the author for realizing the pain her parents had endured and the devastation her father's drinking had wrought.
