I really enjoyed reading Niching Up. It kept me engaged and imparted some valuable knowledge broad enough to be useful in virtually any industry. By the last page I was confident and excited about what I had learned and how I could use it. The author effectively communicated his concepts while not making this feel like a heavy business strategy textbook -his pop culture references and analogies along with the conversational tone kept it light and easy to read while providing a strong connection with the reader. It was also a very good strategy for making his key points memorable.

Even in his writing Chris managed to niche effectively by sticking to a streamlined outline without unnecessary branching. I didn’t feel like I was being dragged off onto a tangent at any point or given the opportunity to get bored of a concept going too in depth for a first read. He provides references to other books and helpful resources throughout where a reader may want to explore something he briefly introduced in more detail. I would want to read this book again after putting his theories into practice to utilize those resources as more questions arose.

There really wasn’t anything to criticize in this book except one small note which is really more of a potential negative for some readers. While the pop culture references were mostly understandable and added meaning for me as a fellow ‘nerd’, I’m not certain they would hold the same meaning for someone without the same background or cultural references. A specific sports team slogan reference for example may have had significant meaning to the author but confused me a bit not being from anywhere near that state or particularly a sports fan.

Overall I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. To close a book, feel like you've learned something valuable, been inspired to start something exciting with the knowledge, AND had an enjoyable read to top it all off is a sure sign of fantastic writing.
