Mum’s the Word is a heart-warming and yet hilarious, non-fiction book with two best friends chronicling their stories of motherhood. Lis Norman is a mother of twin boys and has many fond memories with her sons such as; the dropping of the “F bomb” (fart), heroic slaying of spiders and haircut battles. Tracey Samios is a mother of three girls and share memories such as; one of her daughters “flouring” the carpet, nightmarish car trips and epic battles over front seats, mirrors and just about anything else you can think of!
Even though this is a book, the authors wrote it in a way where it seemed like it was just a couple of mothers coming together and trading stories. The tone of the book is conversational, light and full of humor. The quotes they added at the end of each chapter helped to bring more humor into the stories. Another aspect about the book I liked was that they didn’t just simply tell the funny stories. They talked about the serious and sensitive subjects too. Lis talks about her complications with conception and the things that her and her husband had to do to complete their family. Tracey brings up dealing with bad teachers and a frightening incident where she had to jump into a pool, fully clothed, to save her daughter.
This book is one where all mothers can bond over. In the book, the authors also share advice from their own experiences. My favorite piece of advice was Tracey urging parents to not be afraid to seek professional help and guidance if there is something they’re struggling with. It doesn’t make you a bad parent because you’re struggling and need help. It makes you a great parent because you’re willing to find a solution to better help your child and yourself.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There were a few grammatical errors, but they can be overlooked as readers will find themselves enthralled by the stories. I would recommend this book to mothers, mothers-to-be and even women who are considering it in the future. This could also be an enlightening read for fathers as well. I truly enjoyed reading this endearing book about friendship, love and family.

How many mothers can relate to that line? How many people, who have ever lived with children, can relate to that line? If you can’t… then be grateful that you never had to wake up at the crack of dawn because a child was hungry. You probably also never had to deal with children getting their iron supplements from eating screws. If all of this sound familiar to you, then Mum’s the Word, written by Lis Norman and Tracey Samios, will have you either sighing in remembrance or laughing out loud at the pure joy of having children around.“Mums are basically just part of a scientific experiment to prove that sleep is not a crucial part of human life.”-Unknown
