Niching Up by Chris Dreyer

The author explains how to get into a specialized market, in other words, niching up. He gives ideas with examples about how to look for a new niche and do the research. He does not just display some theory as he, himself is in a successful business where he found a niche. I like that he says that not all are advantages or a rosy path, but shows us what those disadvantages could be. He presents us with the raw reality as it is. It is for us to choose to specialize or not. He emphasizes the value of niching up. The purpose of niching up is to be more attractive to the potential customer because of the expertise that we can provide. It is a fact that only a few would be able to do it at that level and we can exploit that. Niching will not take us to scarcity but to abundance.

Before investing in a niche, he asks the right questions to evaluate if it would be suitable and he invites us to do the same. Once what the interest would be is decided we can use data to help us make decisions.
I think this book does a great job of presenting the basic things we need to consider if we want to get out from the standard business we are in and take a step forward and narrow down our target customers by offering more distinctive value. He has done all the groundwork for us, what else can we ask for?
It has been well edited; therefore, errors did not prevent me from enjoying the reading.

I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars because it gives straightforward advice. It goes directly to the point without ornamentations. The advice is easy to understand and to put into practice if you have an idea in mind that could work in the current market.

I would recommend the book to people who want to have some tips about how to narrow down the business they are in, to specialize in it. But it is not a step-by-step one that will take you from the hand to start up a new business, which is not a criticism, I am only stating what the target reader would be.
