"The real act of marriage takes place in the heart, not in the ballroom, church, or synagogue. It's a choice you make—not just on your wedding day but over and over again—and that choice is reflected in the way you treat your husband or wife." Barbara de Angelis

Ingiete Oyama's "My Spouse, My Friend" is an intriguing study of friendship, love, and the complex dynamics of a married life. Oyama skilfully weaves a story that explores the nuances of modern marriages, offering readers an intriguing and thought-provoking read. The narrative follows their lives as they navigate the ups and downs of married life, forming a tapestry of growth, love, and hardships. Oyama narrates in a way that is both familiar and captivating, which makes it easier for readers to get attached to the characters and immerse themselves in the narrative.

The author discusses a broad range of marital subjects, including love, intimacy, obedience, money, disagreements, forgiveness, and adapting to changes in the relationship. It emphasizes the significance of equality between spouses, focusing on the biblical roles that God himself assigns to each partner through the Bible. True love is neither self-centred nor selfish, as Ingiete rightly highlights; hence, there should never be a master-and-maid relationship in a happily ever-after marriage. Oyama also addresses the downsides of being unforgiving and advises couples not to stop keeping a record of every mistake made. The book covers the necessities for a happy marriage, the adjustments a woman must make after being married, and techniques to sustain positive connections. It is also noted that "a marriage that is formed with God as the central figure, not friends and relatives, is the ultimate one."

Oyama's in-depth examination of the friendship aspect of marriage is one of the book's strongest features. The author skilfully demonstrates how a solid friendship can strengthen the romantic bond between spouses, leading to a strong and lasting relationship. The characters are well-developed, and their challenges and achievements feel real, leading readers to relate to them. The book flows along at a perfect pace, capturing the reader's attention throughout. Oyama skilfully combines intense, humorous, and emotional moments to create a well-balanced story that captures the complexities of relationships in real life.

The book is well-edited, with no grammatical errors, and short and concise. The book additionally teaches you the importance of mutual respect, trust, and support, which are the building blocks of a solid marriage. This novel is a must-read for anyone looking for a heartfelt and thought-provoking exploration of modern-day relationships. I found no negatives to state; hence, I give this book five out of five stars.
