Review of My Spouse, my friend
Why is it that marriages nowadays do not last long? Is there something we are doing wrong, or is it that we no longer respect the marriage institution and thereby walk in or out of it as we please? Ingiete Oyama is a counselor and educator who will help us find what might be amiss and how to navigate through it and have loving and healthy marriages in her book, My Spouse, My Friend.
In this book, she educates readers on marriage and its purpose, as God intended. She also discusses why partners should strive to make their marriage work and stand by one another during storms. Readers also understand that they are solely responsible for their happiness and not their partner's obligations. Ingiete has reinforced that partners should not enter marriage with the divorce mentality as an escape route. This already sets the marriage for failure as the partners are not fully invested. The author discusses more controversial topics, such as submission, initially conceived as the husband dominating or being superior to the wife for a long time. She enlightens that both parties are equal before God and that the man being the head is a solution to avoid confusion in the house and bring order. A sensitive topic that she brings to light is that married people should watch the friends they keep as they reflect themselves.
What I loved the most about this book is that the author not only shares real-life examples but also offers solutions to the challenges shared in the examples. Readers undergoing the same issues will then have a guide or a road map for solving their issues using the author's advice. I also loved that the author used Bible verses and scriptures to support her discussions.
There is nothing I was not too fond of about the book. I appreciate the author for demystifying various myths surrounding marriage and shining a light so readers can analyze their marriage and rectify it wherever they have gone wrong. I also love that the author tackled the most sensitive topics that, for a long time, most people have avoided talking about. Topics such as submission, finances and even sensuality. Readers will benefit greatly from them. They will also learn how essential it is to involve God in their marriages.
The book was professionally edited because I only found two grammatical errors. For the many valuable lessons and relevant information in this book, I award it five out of five stars. I recommend the book to Christian readers who are not married yet since they will have learned what it takes to build a happy, loving and strong marriage before they are married and also to married couples, as the information in the book will help them analyze their marriage and rectify where there's a need to have a happy and loving marriage.
