Reconfigurement by E. Alan Fleischauer is a comprehensive guide that aims to help readers plan and prepare for a fulfilling and secure retirement. One of the key aspects that resonated with me was the author’s discussion on reevaluating the traditional retirement age of 65. He points out that with advancements in medicine and nutrition, the average life expectancy of Americans has increased, rendering the conventional retirement age obsolete. His perspective will encourage readers to rethink their retirement plans and consider extending their working years to ensure a more comfortable post-retirement life. The author pointed out the significance of having a robust insurance policy, such as an income protection plan, to safeguard against unforeseen circumstances that could affect one’s income stream before retiring. This approach will help secure financial stability after retirement. The author’s inclusion of personal assessment tools is another useful resource I found while reading the book. By guiding readers through these assessments, he empowers them to identify their strengths, interests, and career aspirations, which will in the end aid in making informed decisions about their professional and retirement plans. Throughout the book, the author’s use of real-life examples and numerical calculations helped me, as a reader, understand complex concepts. For instance, the calculations presented in Chapter 6, which illustrate how to maximise Social Security benefits, provide a tangible and practical application of the principles.

I appreciate the careful editing of the book; it made my reading experience enjoyable. The author’s writing style is conversational and humorous. This kept me connected from beginning to end. The well-placed insets, which contain jokes and quotable quotes, further helped me to understand the author’s thoughts.

I rate this book five out of five stars. The reasons for this exceptional rating are the author’s use of storytelling to reinforce his points, such as the story about Ed the chiropractor and the wise farmer in Afghanistan, which promotes the concept that pain can be beneficial in certain cultural contexts. The second is including insets with key points, jokes, quotable quotes, and charts, which enhanced my overall reading experience. The author’s provision of references gives credibility and enables me, as a reader, to delve deeper into topics of interest to me.

I did not notice any negatives in the book. The author’s engaging writing style and use of humour made every page a pleasure to read, ensuring that I remained engrossed throughout the book. I recommend this book to anyone seeking a comprehensive approach to retirement planning. Whether you are just starting your career or nearing retirement, this book gives invaluable insights and practical strategies to help readers achieve financial security and a fulfilling post-retirement life. The author’s expertise and guidance also make this book an essential resource for anyone seeking to navigate the difficulties of retirement planning with confidence and preparedness.
