Royal Gossip by Trisha Goodwin is a fascinating book about the lives of members of the British monarchy. The book begins with Queen Victoria and includes information up to and including the current royal family. Goodwin provided historical background on each of the monarchs and then focused on their personal lives. Queen Victoria’s relationship with her husband, Prince Albert, is the focus of the beginning of the book. It is fascinating to learn how their relationship began. I never knew he was her first cousin or a German prince. The next relationship discussed was King George V and Queen Mary. It was interesting to learn that Queen Mary had initially been engaged to King George’s brother, Albert, who died before they could marry.

It was interesting for me to learn more about the modern monarchy. For example, I was not familiar with Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth’s sister, or Princess Ann, Queen Elizabeth’s daughter. They both led fascinating lives. Although Princess Margaret died in 2002, Princess Ann is still a highly active member of the royal family. The book discusses their marriages and weddings in detail. Readers who have an interest in the royal family will enjoy reading this book. It provides historical details that readers may be surprised to learn. The author also explained how divorce was historically unacceptable but has changed. This change is evident in the marriage of King Charles and Queen Camilla, who were both married previously. The historical background that the author provides is captivating and held my interest.

What I liked most about the book were the photographs and illustrations included. They move the story along very well and add another layer of detail. There are photographs and illustrations of royal weddings, going back to Queen Victoria. Although I have an interest in the monarchy, I had never seen many of these images. This book will appeal to readers who have an interest in history, particularly the British monarchy.

The only negative aspect of the book is the number of errors. There were over ten errors in the book which prevents me from giving it a perfect rating. For that reason, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It captured my attention from the first page. I found it difficult to put down. I finished reading it in one sitting. With additional editing, this book is deserving of a perfect rating. It is educational and entertaining.
