Review of Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book
I grew up believing golf was a sport for the elite. I always thought one had to grow up playing the spot, as I did not imagine how one could find it enjoyable. However, I chose to read Playing Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book by Kalliope Barlis to get exposure to what the game entails. I am more enthusiastic about playing golf now, thanks to Kalliope’s insights, which changed my whole perspective of the game.
Kalliope argues that playing the game begins in your mind before you go to the golf course. This is because our minds either positively or negatively affect our brain chemistry and, subsequently, our ability to perform tasks. This calls for a very intentional mindset, as the brain prefers the familiarity of repeating the same thing, yet it can only learn the most by doing different things. The author also argues that it is the quality of practice that makes one a good golfer, in contrast to the quantity of practice one engages in. What’s interesting is that, unlike other sports like marathons or short sprints, where constant practice makes one perfect, anyone can get a hole-in-one.
Kalliope has written this book in a simple language that is easy for any reader unfamiliar with golf to understand. She provided illustrations that graphically presented her directions in subsequent discussions and in-text references that readers would use to find relevant illustrations. This makes it more accessible, even for novice golfers, to learn golf independently without spending a lot of money on trainers. Additionally, Kalliope advises that one should carry the book in their golf bag and use it as a manual that they can quickly scan through, even a page, before playing.
The author has included titles and subtitles for each part and chapter, respectively, which will help readers quickly find the information they are interested in. The exercises contained in different sections will foster readers’ understanding of the author’s recommendations, thus enhancing the book’s practicability. This is what I liked the most about this book because readers don’t have to apply bulky information while on the course but can learn bit by bit. The guiding questions will also enable readers to question their misconceptions about golf and their realizations after playing, further authenticating the author’s suggestions.
There is nothing to dislike about this book, which I happily award five out of five stars. It is professionally edited, as I found only two errors. I recommended it to readers who would love to learn golf. It is suitable for professional golfers as it can improve their skills and also act as a manual that they can use to train their novice counterparts.
