It was on Thanksgiving Day of 2001 that Louis was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at Yale. This began a series of treatments, and Mark Unger and Mary Ellen, his parents, were determined to do everything to save him. This included going to the best cancer hospital they could access. They had to cooperate with different doctors, do a lot of research, and go through a lot of medical jargon to ensure that they could fight the monster that had attacked their son while he was only three years old. They also had Harry, Louis' brother, who needed their love and attention.

First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough by Mark Unger is about the medical journey of his son Louis, which led to a breakthrough in science. In this book, he has included Louis's treatment, from his diagnosis all through the treatment. During this period, he had to keep himself up-to-date on his son's treatment. He has included all the notes that he took. This helped him learn the medical terms, keep up with the treatment, and do further research. Their inclusion in this book will help anyone who needs to apply them. Although they may seem brief, anyone with an understanding of neuroblastoma will be able to understand what they mean.

When Louis was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, it was easy to see how everyone was involved in his healing journey. This included the doctors, his parents, the rest of the family members, and help from health support groups. Going through different journeys of cancer patients by reading memoirs and survival stories, I realized the struggle that they experienced financially, and Mark described this briefly and concisely on the path that he took, which will be helpful for anyone who needs this information.

Louis's treatment and the outcome have benefited many other people, with the protocol used in his treatment being applied to other patients. This book not only looks at the family benefit but also goes a long way toward providing information on tackling neuroblastoma. I, therefore, rate First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough by Mark Unger 5 out of 5 stars. The book is professionally edited, with only a few errors noted. Another aspect that makes the book exceptional is the clear timelines from the day of diagnosis, the inclusion of a glossary at the end of the book that involves most of the medical terms, the links to resources for support, as well as the medical background of some conditions and the treatment procedures.

I recommend this book to healthcare professionals, especially in oncology centers, since it will help them stay up-to-date on some of the protocols used in the management of neuroblastoma. Any other people, patients, or those with relatives with neuroblastoma will also find the strategies put in place by the Unger family to be helpful. Through this book and their experiences, it is also possible to learn some life skills, especially from Louis, for everyone and those who may end up in a similar situation. In light of this, I have nothing negative to mention about this book.
