Review of Principled Negotiation and Mediation in the International Arena
Principled Negotiation and Mediation in the International Arena: Talking with Evil by Paul J. Zwier details case-by-case analyses of what it entails to conduct alternative dispute resolution methods in the sensitive cases of terrorism, state violence, and multilateral country relations.
Zwier points out different case studies, including the US’ fight against terrorism, Israel’s conflict with Palestine, the tripartite issues between Chile, Peru, and Bolivia, Kenya’s internal crises and other socio-economic issues. Zwier points out that, oftentimes, what we term “evil” are simply things or issues we do not understand. He proffers ways to handle and neutralize crises caused by “evil” through more peaceful methods.
Zwier’s methods are practical and direct. He outlines the issues in each case-by-case analysis before going on to suggest actions that could be done differently and real solutions to the real problems of each of the countries in each analysis. Zwier invites readers to think in an alternative way. The truth is that mediation or any other alternative dispute mechanism requires immense skill and insight into the suffering of the parties involved. But Zwier makes the processes easy to grasp by relating principles to real-life cases. One of the most prominent chapters, in my opinion, pointed out the conflict between Israel and Palestine, explaining from the beginning and in a precise manner the actions of each party that must have led to the pain of the other party. I found the author’s approach to be the most ideal.
What is most fascinating is that Zwier not only points out the causes for conflict in each case, but he also points out viable solutions that can be applied to several other cases. This book will be helpful to readers interested in alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, especially as they affect international and national relations, including lawyers, politicians, and professionals in the field of international law and arbitration or mediation.
I found nothing to dislike about this book, so I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Readers must read the book with a constructive and open mind, aiming to understand that nothing is inherently evil so that we can unearth the true causes of conflict and lead to viable solutions among disputing parties.
