Laurie Beck’s I Am Living to Tell: Surviving Incurable Cancer Without Killing My Mother, My Granny or My Ex is a true story about the author’s battle with both non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and leukemia. When Beck was diagnosed with these diseases, the prognosis seemed dire. She was never fond of going to the doctor and the thought of enduring chemotherapy terrified her, so much so that she looked not only a second opinion, but also a third. Upon visiting a specialist in Boston, it was explained to Laurie that her condition was chronic, and chemotherapy was a last resort. Thus, Laurie was sent home with the advice to “wait and see” if her condition worsened.

Laurie took matters in her own hands and began to seek out alternative forms of medicine. Although she had a fear of needles, she took the advice of her mother and began acupuncture. Along with acupuncture, Laurie explored other forms of Eastern medicine. She began to learn about the impact that emotional and spiritual health had on one’s physical health. This took Laurie on a journey to heal not only her body, but also her mind. She also began to address the negative impact that some of her personal relationships may have had on her health.

As Beck talks resolving her family relationships, she is very self-aware of her own flaws. She is open about her own mistakes, and discusses the importance of forgiveness. By letting go of her own anger, she was able to focus on her own health and healing. She reminds the reader that sometimes one’s own dissatisfaction with life can be detrimental to their health.

This is a well-written book. There were no editing errors, and it was very easy to read. Laurie Beck is very easy empathize with. Even if you are skeptical of alternative medicine, she makes a very compelling argument on its benefits. Throughout the book she mentions that in no way should anybody forgo medical attention in pursuit of alternative medicine. She also states that just because it was the route that she chose, it is not for everybody. I appreciated her candidness about this subject.

I Am Living to Tell is an inspirational story. I think anybody who has struggled with serious illness would appreciate her drive to find healing. If you enjoy spiritual healing books, then I would recommend I Am Living to Tell. Beck’s story is interesting and she really delves into her own research of spiritual healing. I give I Am Living to Tell: Surviving Incurable Cancer Without Killing My Mother, My Granny or My Ex 4 out of 4 stars.

Wow wow and wow! Your review presents the book in most appealing way and it's something I could use as an argument to support my ideas of alternative medicine. It happens that at the moment I am reading book about health based on science and completely opposite to this method of healing. I am arguing with the author in my mind and this might be a proof of my opinion. Thanks!

I'm glad she fought and lived to tell the story. It's difficult not to give up when given a death sentence. It's evident that even when it seems you have no option, you can decide that you do. Thanks for the review.

Splendid review, Barb. I love the subtle nod to the fact that the origin of some handicaps lie in the emotional and spiritual, not merely the physical. Thanks!!
