Linda’s actions did not match her words. Vernon wanted to believe what she said, but he needed more than hollow promises to restore his broken trust in her. Vernon Baumrind’s Deceit is a work of nonfiction that chronicles the choices he made for the sake of his family. He acknowledged that his love for Linda didn’t vanish and that letting go of their relationship wasn’t easy. Could their marriage survive?

During the eleven years of their marriage, everyone called Linda and Vernon “the perfect couple”. They lived in their dream house with their two beautiful, happy children. They enjoyed a country club membership and personal wealth. But Linda risked everything for an extramarital affair.

The author described the confusion and frustration that occurred when Linda abruptly withdrew from intimacy in their marriage. He didn’t understand her reasons, and she refused to discuss it. But one day, Baumrind suddenly realized that Linda was involved with another man. The jolt shook him to the core; he knew the man. How was this possible? As a couple, they enjoyed socializing with that man and his wife. Why would the author divulge the sordid story that affected not only his family but also the community at large? How far was he willing to go to prove his suspicions?

Confronted with a marriage that was beyond repair, Baumrind resorted to extreme measures to gather irrefutable evidence of the affair. Who was the other man? What shocking secrets did Vernon Baumrind reveal? What would happen to the children? Deceit exposes the details of a depraved affair that garnered national attention. The author bravely shares his story of public humiliation for you to read. Are you brave enough to read it?

I like Baumrind’s narrative style. He did not pull any punches in this book, but he did more than express righteous indignation as a disgruntled spouse. He laid bare his deepest emotions for the world to see. The emotional impact of this story left me in tears by the time I turned the last page. There is nothing that I dislike about this author’s work.

This book is exceptionally well-edited. For professional editing and a blockbuster story, Baumrind’s book deserves 5 out of 5 stars, I recommend Deceit to adults due to the mature subject matter. It includes vivid descriptions of sexual activity and some earthy dialogue that may shock sensitive readers.
